Second-Half Surge Propels Men’s Soccer Over Hood, Falcons Advance to Conference Championship Game

GRANTHAM, Pa. – On Wednesday evening, the Messiah University men's soccer team used a three-goal second half to defeat the Blazers of Hood College, 3-0 to advance to MAC Commonwealth Championship game. The Falcons controlled most of the possession in the first half but could not find the back of the goal and the game remained scoreless headed into the break. The Falcons got on the board in the 64th minute with a goal from Kyle Spodnik by Patrick Lee to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead. In the 70th minute, Patrick Lee scored a goal from Sam Phillips to give the Falcons a 2-0 lead. Just four minutes later, Kyle Spodnik scored his second goal of the night from Davis Pagett to give the Falcons the 3-0 win.
 
Up next, the Falcons host the Mustangs of Stevenson University on Saturday, Nov. 8 at 4:30 p.m. in the MAC Commonwealth Championship game.

First Half
After some back-and-forth play, the Falcons looked to get on the board in the 21st minute. Sam Phillips had a couple of great chances in front of the goal, but the Hood goalkeeper made a great reaction save of Phillips' first shot and his second shot rang off the crossbar to keep the game scoreless. The Falcons got their next chance just a minute later with a Patrick Lee shot on goal, but the Hood goalkeeper made another save to keep the game tied. The Falcons did not get another shot on goal in the rest of the first half and game remained scoreless headed into the half.
 
Second Half
The Falcons opened the game on the attack and Patrick Lee ripped a shot in the 47th minute, but a Hood defender blocked the shot before going into the goal and game stayed tied. The Blazers got their first shot on goal in the 59th minute, but Kessler Forrest made the save to keep Hood from taking the lead. The Falcons looked to break the scoreless game in the 64th minute. Matt Griffin took the long throw from the near sideline and threw the ball into the box. After bouncing off a couple of players, Patrick Lee headed the ball to Kyle Spodnik and he tapped the ball into the back of the goal to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead. The Falcons continued to press the Blazers' defense and looked to add to their lead in the 70th minute. Sam Phillips dribbled the ball into the attacking third and ripped a shot that looked like it was headed into the goal but bounced off the left post. Phillips gathered the rebound and sent a ball in front of the goal and Patrick Lee tipped it past the Blazers' goalkeeper to extend the Falcons lead to two. The Falcons added to lead with the second goal of the day from Kyle Spodnik off a great pass from Davis Pagett to give the Falcons the 3-0 win.

The Blazers tallied two shots with one shot on goal. The Falcons earned five corner kicks to the Blazers' three. Kessler Forrest earned the win in goal for the Falcons and made one save.
