GRANTHAM, Pa.- The Messiah Wrestling team defeated York College on senior night with a 35-11 final score. The Friday night victory included a first period fall for
Dalton Monger and technical falls by
Ryder Slayton and
Sawyer Dereszynski.
The Falcons return to Hitchcock Arena on Saturday, Feb. 8 for the Messiah Open. Wrestling action begins at 10:00 a.m.
Action on the Mats
Jacob DelVecchio was first to strike at 125 lbs. with a takedown at 1:52.
Bryce Arnold earned an escape to trail 3-1 after the first period. DelVecchio selected to start bottom and earned the escape for the loan point of the second period. Arnold started period three with an escape point after starting down. He earned one more escape late in the period, but two takedowns and a riding time point gave DelVecchio the win via 11-3 major decision.
The bout at 133 lbs. started with a scoreless first period between
Caiden Heller and Vincent Paolucci. Paolucci chose to start down and capitalized with a reversal at 1:12 that remained the only points that were scored and Paolucci earned the win via 2-0 decision.
Shaun Quirk was the first to put the Falcons on the board with a 15-10 decision over Jacob Grzybek. Grzybek held a commanding 8-2 lead after a takedown and five nearfall points in the first period. Quirk scored on a reversal with seven seconds remaining to begin a shift in momentum. Grzybek started period two down and quickly earned the escape before Quirk earned a takedown of his own. Grzybek was able to escape but Quirk secured a takedown and four nearfall points as the seconds ticked away in the second period and took the lead 12-10. Quirk secured a 15-10 decision after adding a third period takedown.
Dalton Monger made quick work of David Vacca at 149 lbs. with a takedown at 2:28 and a fall at 1:36.
At 157 lbs.,
Clay Gainer defeated Frank Gulli via 11-2 major decision after an explosive third. After a scoreless two periods, Gainer started down for the final period. Gulli opted to start neutral and Gainer started the third period with the one point. Gainer earned three takedowns and an escape in the final two minutes. An added riding time point gave Gainer the 11-2 major decision.
Keegan Demarest and
Austin Brass won their matches via forfeit at 165 lbs. and 174 lbs. respectively.
At 184 lbs.,
Ryder Slayton used a pair of takedowns in each period to claim a 19-4 technical fall over Jack Wendel. Leading 12-3 going into the final period, Slayton escaped and earned a takedown in the first minute. A takedown at 0:41 gave Slayton the 19-4 technical fall at 6:19.
Sawyer Dereszynski also put together a show for the crowd with an 18-1 technical fall over Owen Dixon. Dereszynski picked up a quick seven points with a takedown and four count nearfall. He added another seven with his second takedown and four nearfall points to lead 14-1 after the first period. Dereszynski slammed Dixon to the mat for a second-period takedown that added a riding time point for an 18-1 technical fall in 3:31.
The first two minutes at 285 lbs. were scoreless before Derek Martin earned a takedown against
Micah Martinez. Martinez was able to escape and headed into the second period trailing 3-1. Martin used an escape and takedown in period two to extend his lead to 7-1 with one period remaining. He added a takedown in the third that Martinez was able to escape. Martin earned a final point from riding time to earn the 11-2 major decision.
