Purchase, NY — After beating York College for the first time in three years last week, Messiah charted the team's third straight win and first conference win of the season against Manhattanville College, 11-9 at Valiants Field Saturday.
Freshman Brian Meenan and sophomore Jess Rogers opened the game up for the Falcons, scoring back-to-back goals at the 10:34 and 8:09 marks, respectively.
Despite Manhattanville (2-3, 0-1) tying the game up at deuces before the end of the first quarter, Messiah (3-2, 1-0) opened the game up even more, scoring eight of the next nine goals over a 23-minute stretch. Sophomore Heath Kupecky scored three times during the run that was started by senior J.J. Miller's goal off the second-quarter faceoff.
Manhattanville was down, but certainly not out.
The Valiants would rally, coming within one score of the Falcons, but six unanswered goals were not enough. After the Valiants' Mike Strauss' goal with 1:36 left to play, Miller won the ensuing faceoff for the Falcons, putting the breaks on a valiant comeback for Manhattanville — Miller's third goal of the game.
Kupecky finished the game with five points and junior James Baden finished with four off three assists and a goal for himself. Senior goalie Zach Cureton stopped 10 of 19 shots in the cage for Messiah.
The Falcons look to keep their winning ways going, returning home to face Alvernia University Wednesday. That MAC contest is slated for a 7 p.m. start.
