Messiah Closer, Can't Find Initial Win At Ursinus In 5-7 Defeat

Collegeville, PA — Messiah's search for its first win continues as the Falcons dropped a close, 5-7 contest at Ursinus College Saturday.

Messiah (0-2) showed solid defensive ability throughout the entire game, especially early on. It took over 10 minutes for the Bears to score first, that coming from junior Mike Bloom with 4:43 remaining in the opening stanza.

With a man-up advantage, Messiah's Kevan Schellenburg scored with 17 seconds left in the first quarter off a classmate Heath Kupecky assist.

The Bears' senior midfielder Pat Gillen defined the second quarter scoring back-to-back goals to open the game up for Ursinus (3-0) before junior James Baden could make the game a 2-3 game at half time.

The Falcons struggled in the first half offensively, taking only 11 shots.

The Bears scored three unanswered goals to start the second half and had a four-goal lead with 10 minutes to play in the game. Kupecky and freshman Brian Meenan added two goals near the end of the contest to make the end result a little closer.

Messiah will look for the team's first win on Wednesday against Neumann University at Anderson Field. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
