Dallas, PA – Saturday's game could have been labeled Misericordia University vs. Kevan Schellenburg.
The result would still have been the same.
With five goals in the first 25 minutes against the host Cougars, sophomore Kevan Schellenburg and the Falcons' lead was more than sufficient to continue their recent roll through the MAC. The final 35 minutes was icing on the cake, capping the second half with 11 straight goals and finishing Misericordia by a final score of 21-4 at Mangelsdorf Field.
After back-to-back emotional wins against Eastern University (an 11-10 decision) and Elizabethtown College (by the same score in overtime), Messiah (9-2, 7-0) crashed into Misericordia (7-6, 3-5) with offensive prowess in the early going, scoring twice in the opening minute. The starting attack of Schellenburg and junior James Baden each found the net, starting off their big days, in which two of Messiah's top three goal scorers combined for 12 goals and 15 points.
Freshman Brian Meenan came up big in his first start of the season on attack, totaling four points on a goal and three assists in the place of leading-goal scorer and sophomore Heath Kupecky.
From the 4:17 mark in the second quarter to the 11:18 mark in the fourth, Messiah rattled off 11 straight goals, with seven different players finding the back of the cage.
Senior J.J. Miller continued to show his dominance at the face-off X by going 16-18 against the Cougars at center field.
With the win, Messiah looks to face an opponent they have waited for all season long: Widener University.
After their original game was postponed due to lightning, Messiah and Widener, both undefeated in MAC play, will battle on Tuesday for conference supremacy.
Game time is set for 7 p.m. at Widener's Edith R. Dixon Field.
