Meadville, PA - The Messiah College Falcons (18-7, 5-1) increased their current winning streak to eight ganes as they defeated Kenyon College (3-15) and Allegheny College (6-19) in tri-match action Saturday.
Messiah opened up the day sweeping the Ladies of Kenyon College 25-18, 25-22, and 25-18.
Messiah's all-time career kills leader,
Lauren Rees, added another 14 kills to her mark against Kenyon College while junior setter
Jessica Geib dished out 35 assists.
Kenyon's Sierra DeLeon registered nine kills in the loss.
The Falcons would next turn their sights on the Gators of Allegheny College. Messiah's momentum rolled into the first set against Allegheny as they outlasted the Gators 26-24. The Gators bounced back in the second set and got to an early 16-11 lead. Despite trailing, the Falcons were able to storm back and tie the score at 22, only to lose the second set 23-25.
Messiah would take the third set 25-20 and go up 2-1 in the match, and would eventually go up 24-18 in the fourth set. However, the Gators fought off six match points and tied the set at 24 points. Messiah and Allegheny then traded points, with the Falcons proving to be too much by taking the set 28-26 to win the match.
Geib had another solid effort recording 47 assists and four kills for the Falcons. Rees led the Falcons' attack with 16 kills while freshmen
Alyssa Vorbeck and senior
Lindsay King also knocked double digit kills with 12 and 10, respectively.
Allegheny's Julia Weeks led all hitters with 20 kills in the match while Madie Hudac doled out 39 assists.
Messiah returns to conference play on Wednesday, Oct. 17 when they will host Widener University (13-13, 4-2). The match will kick-off three straight conference matches against Widener University, Hood College and Elizabethtown College-- three teams with a combined conference record of 9-9. Messiah is currently tied in second place in the conference with Elizabethtown.
