Box Score
Grantham, PA – Messiah College scored seven times in the first against Lycoming on Tuesday, finishing the night with an 8-0 win to move to 6-0 in the Commonwealth Conference.
The Falcons, ranked No. 2 in the most recent NSCAA Top 25 Poll, also moves to 13-1-1 overall in 2012.
Against the Warriors on Tuesday, Messiah was sure to avoid any drama similar to that of Saturday's win over rival Lebanon Valley College. In that victory, the Falcons
scored three second half goals to overcome an early 0-2 deficit to stun the Dutchmen.
On Tuesday, the Falcons had three players score two goals apiece.
The scores didn't come immediately for Messiah, but when they started it appeared as if they might never stop.
Senior
Rachel Scheibeler opened the scoring in the 16th minute off an assist from classmate
Alex Brandt. Less than three minutes later, the duo teamed up again for Scheibeler's second goal of the game—and ninth of the season—when Brandt one-timed a cross from junior
Alicia Frey to Scheibeler on a run into the middle of the penalty box.
Now up 2-0, Brandt to work with two goals of her own to put Messiah up 4-0. The two goals came in an 87-second span, with her second score in the 29th minute coming off a sharp cross from freshman
Trisha Tshudy. Brandt's hard strike was a riser off the crossbar and into the net.
Brandt's two goals were her tenth and eleventh on the season, respectively, with her two assists on Scheibeler's goals giving her eight assists on the season.
With the floodgates now open, Messiah went up 5-0 less than three minutes later off the foot of sophomore
Mackenzie Clapper. Her score came on a similar play to that of Brandt's second goal, with freshman
Nikki Elsaesser crossing the ball from right end line. The pass initially looked like it would be met by classmate
Macaulay Soto, but her run into the box was ahead of the ball; the ball rolled behind Soto and was pounded in by Clapper.
Two more goals were scored in the first half by Messiah, with the Falcons' sixth goal coming from Elsaesser and their seventh goal coming from freshman
Carly Schaefer.
In the second half, Elsaesser scored Messiah's eighth and final goal in the 84th minute of play. The goal came on a diving header by the freshman after a header by Clapper fell short of crossing the goal line.
In total, Tuesday's game was a case of complete domination by the Falcons. They outshot the Warriors 31 to zero, attempting 13 corners kicks against none for the visitors.
The loss drops Lycoming to 1-11-3 overall, including 1-5 in the Commonwealth.
With 20 goals in their last three games, and 31 goals in their last six games, Messiah will look forward to their next on Saturday, Oct. 20 when they play host to Widener University. The game will be played at 3:00 p.m. on Shoemaker Field as apart of Messiah's Homecoming Day.
