Gettysburg, PA - Messiah College opened their 2012-13 swim seasons with the men and women each dropping two decisions on Saturday at Gettysburg. The Falcons' teams lost to both Gettysburg and Susquehanna.
On the women's side, senior
Katelynn Sagaser broke her own record in the 200 butterfly, tallying a time of 2:17.27 on Saturday-- an improvement of one tenth, and good for second place in Saturday's meet. Sagaser also set a new record in the 100 butterfly (first place, 1:00.69), breaking
Laura Penwell's record of 1:01.52.
Sagaser also took first in the 200 backstroke (2:14.97).
“This was a good opening day at the pool for our teams,” head coach
Nancy Luley said. “We had some really solid swims.”
In addition to Sagaser's record-setting day, the Falcons received many strong performances across both teams, including the women's 200 medley relay finishing first with a time of 1:53.66. Sophomore
Laura Penwell started her season in the 100 backstroke on strong note by taking second with a time of 1:03.33.
In the 50 freestyle, junior
Hanna Schaffer took first place with a time of 25.46, while classmate
Nate Brown also took first with a time of 22.04. Schaffer also took first in the 100 freestyle with a time of 55.88.
In the 200 freestyle, freshman
Caitlin Magaw and
Anna McArdle took third and fourth with times of 1:31.57 and 1:32.36, respectively. Magaw also finished second in the 200 yard backstroke, falling short only to Sagaser's school record.
On the men's side, sophomore
Michael Lacson took first in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:03.76. In the 200 breaststroke, junior
Daniel Wingert took second with a time of 2:20.34.
Freshman
Aaron Eckman took second place in his Falcons debut in the 1000 freestyle, swimming in a time of 10:30.39.
In total, the Falcons' punched 36 tickets to the end-of-season MAC championships with their times on Saturday.
"For our first day, we feel good," Luley said. "With the times we had today, we're looking forward to what the season will hold for us."
