Grantham, PA - The Messiah College Falcons (12-7, 4-1) did not experience any let down after their Worthington Classic win on Saturday and swept the Albright College Lions (4-8, 0-5) in a conference match-up.
The Falcons came out strong in the first set and established the tone early by serving the Lions tough and controlling the net with a quick offense quarterbacked by junior setter Jessica Geib. The Falcons kept their foot on the accelerator and closed out the first set 25-16.
In the second set, the Falcons utilized a younger lineup getting playing time for a number of underclassmen.
“It's always good to be able to get the younger kids in to play in front of the home crowd,” Head coach Judi Tobias commented. “It's one thing to play away and get the younger kids in but to be able to play at home and get them in is even better”.
The younger line up would show some nerves in front of the home crowd but would finish strong taking the second set 25-22.
Despite a close second set, Messiah would finish the match on a strong note winning the third set 25-18.
“Our goal from the beginning was to win in three and come out strong,” said Coach Tobias. “We're trying to work on finishing matches stronger then we start.”
Geib anchored the Falcons offense by delivering 44 assists. Senior outside hitter Lauren Rees tallied 12 kills in the victory while senior middle hitter Lindsay King added 9 kills of her own.
Messiah improves to 12-7 overall and 4-1 in the conference with the win over Albright. The Falcons will resume play on Saturday, October 6, when they host the annual MAC Crossover and welcome Eastern University, DeSales University, and Widener University to Grantham, Pa. The Falcons will play Eastern and DeSales.
