York, PA – After starting the season 0-2, Messiah College found just what the doctor ordered on the road at York College: hot shooting and a double-digit win.
The Falcons defeated the Spartans 75-62 on Tuesday night, shooting a blistering 54% from the field. Messiah shot 11-23 from downtown, as junior
Brad Bolen continued led the way with 22 points. Bolen shot 7-11 from the field, hitting four of his six attempts from three-point range.
Additionally, sophomore
Zac Hoy led the Falcons with a career-high nine assists, collecting a game-high seven rebounds—also a career-high. Impressively, Hoy's nine assists came against zero turnovers, as Messiah turned the ball over just eight times.
The Falcons started quickly on Tuesday, taking a 14-9 lead in the first 5:14 by way of four made three-pointers—one each by brothers
Dan Mosley and
Derek Mosley, and two by
Brad Bolen. Eventually ahead 31-21 with just under seven minutes remaining in the first half, Messiah saw York climb to within 31-26 when Matt McNeeley hit a jumper in the paint.
But the Falcons went on to hit six of their final eight field goal attempts before the intermission, with a dunk by
Brad Bolen putting Messiah ahead 41-28. A moment later, a steal by Bolen led to a fast-break lay-up for
Dan Mosley that gave the Falcons a 43-28 lead at the break.
Overall, the Falcons shot 62% from the field in the game's first 20 minutes, as they hit six of 14 shots from three-point range.
In the second half, Messiah never led by less than 12 points as their lead blossomed to as high as 23 points on two occasions.
Freshman
Scott Bolen scored eight of his 13 points in the second half, finishing with double-digit points for the third time in as many games. Junior
Taylor Groff scored 12 points on 6-9 shooting, with senior
Derek Mosley scoring 17 points on 7-15 shooting overall and 3-8 shooting from downtown.
The Falcons also outrebounded the Spartans 27-20.
York drops to 0-3 with the loss, as Messiah avoids that fate with their season's first win.
Messiah will now wait eight days to add to their win streak, as they'll travel to Lebanon Valley College on Wednesday, Nov. 28, for an 8:00 p.m. contest. The game will be one of five-straight Commonwealth match-ups for Messiah.
