Hilton Head, SC – The Messiah men's tennis team came up with their first win of the season by defeating the Gordon College Fighting Scots on Wednesday afternoon by a score of 6-3.
The Falcons started the match off well with a stronger showing in doubles. Messiah notched wins at second and third doubles, with scores of 8-6 and 8-4, respectively. First doubles pairing of
Michael Brookhart and
Andrew Wismer gave up the first point of the match for Messiah, dropping the pro set 8-3.
Taking over at the number one singles position, first year player Mike Brookhart pulled out yet another commanding win in three sets, with a score of 6-3, 1-6, 10-5, as he continues his flawless singles record this season.
Following his lead, Dave Wichert at number three singles pulled out another close victory for the Falcons by a score of 7-6(2), 7-5. At number four singles,
Peter Shuck continued his dominating play with an authoritative two-set win.
The sixth and final Falcon point came at number six singles with an impressive win by sophomore Chris Brittingham 6-0, 6-3.
The second and third points for Gordon College came at number two singles and number five singles, as Wismer and
Zachary Brunner continued to push forward but could not overcome their Fighting Scots opponents.
This first victory for the Messiah Falcons is a strong sign of their depth as a team as they look forward to a double-header on Friday to finish up their week of spring break tennis. They take on St. Mary's College of Maryland at 8:00 a.m. and FDU-Florham at 6:30 p.m.
