Box Score Game 2
Gettysburg, PA - Messiah College scored three runs in the first inning in an eventual 9-3 win over Gettysburg on Wednesday, collecting a win in the first game of a double-header. The Falcons would score four runs in the seventh inning to break the game open.
Junior right-hander
Jocelyn Hickey went seven inning for the Falcons, allow five hits and three runs. She struck out four batters.
Messiah got on the board early thanks to a two-RBI double from senior
Jaclyn Merkel. Junior
Stephanie Schell would follow Merkyl with a double of her own to plate her teammate and give the Falcons an early 3-0 lead.
In the third inning, sophomore
Krista Ammon would turn a leadoff walk into Messiah fourth run after moving around the bases on a few groundouts and scoring from third on a wild pitch. Ammon would finished 2-4 on the day at the plate with two runs scored.
Senior
Lauren Seneca led off the top of the sixth inning with a double to centerfield. She would move to third base on a singe by sophomore
Lauren Smith and score on a sac fly by
Nicole Blantz.
The Falcons, leading 5-2 after six innings, broke the game open in the top of the seventh inning with an RBI single by
Amanda Fife setting up an RBI groundout by Seneca a few batters later. Two unearned runs would also be given up the Bullets in the frame.
Game Two
In the second game of the double-header, Messiah College again used an early start to earn a victory over the hosting Bullets.
In the first inning, sophomore
Sarah Seneca singled and stole second to lead off the game. Two batters later she would score on a triple by Ammon. Amon would score just a few pitches later on a sac fly by Merkyl.
The Falcons would push their lead to 3-0 in the third inning on another triple-- this one off the bat of Schell to score senior
Ashley Lehman. Lehman had walked to lead off the inning.
Freshman
Mallory Rutledge earned the victory with five innings of work, allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits. She struck out two batters.
Rutledge allowed single runs in the fourth and fifth innings, with a leadoff walk coming back to haunt her for the Bullets' first run. In that frame, Rutledge would fall victim to two passed balls before Gettysburg found themselves on the scoreboard by way of a sac fly. The Bullets' second run was scored off a throwing error from the outfield with two outs.
Sophomore Sara Dietrich pushed her scoreless innings streak to 22 in pitching the final two innings of the game. She allowed one hit and one walk, also striking out a batter.
With the wins, Messiah moves to 14-4. They will travel to The College of New Jersey tomorrow, March 28, for a double-header.
