Grantham, PA - In a match that was determined not to be played, the Messiah College Falcons defeated the Alvernia University Crusaders on Friday at Messiah by the score of 7-2.
The match of the Commonwealth opponents was twice rained out in the prior two weeks, requiring a cancelation of the Falcons' match-up with Gettysburg College in favor of the rescheduled conference match.
The Falcons got off to a hot start-- on a day when the temperatures rose into the upper 70's-- with two wins in the doubles competition. The pairings of
Peter Shuck/
Zachary Brunner and
David Wichert/
Christopher Brittingham earned wins of 8-2 and 8-2 respectively.
Messiah followed the doubles wins with dominanting performances in the singles competition.
Andrew Wismer was the only Falcon to fall in the singles, albeit by close scores of 7-5 and 6-3. Wismer and the Crusaders' Dan Minnich were especially locked in a point-for-point match, with Minnich finding every inch needed to earn the close wins over Wismer.
The Falcons' #1 singles competitor,
Michael Brookhart, took his sets 6-4 and 6-2-- a contest that proved to be the closest Alvernia would come to any other win.
Messiah's remaining players-- Wichert, Shuck, Brunner, and Brittingham, combined for six matches of 6-0 against their opponents as the Falcons would collect the 7-2 Commonwealth win.
The Falcons moved to 4-4 overall and 2-1 in the Commonwealth, and will next compete on Tuesday, April 17, when they travel to Lebanon Valley College for a 3:30 match.
