Grantham, PA - The Falcons could not overcome a 3-0 deficit after doubles play and eventually lost to the Dutchmen of Lebanon Valley by a score of 6-3.
Messiah's top double team of
Andrew Wismer and
Michael Brookhart fell 8-2 to LVC's best pairing of Ethan Grodzinski and Roger Van Scyoc.
The second doubles matchup of Messiah's
David Wichert and
Peter Shuck led to another Falcon defeat. This time it came in an 8-5 decision at the hands of the Dutchmen.
Lebanon Valley swept doubles action with an 8-6 win at the number three doubles position over
Zachary Brunner and
Christopher Brittingham of Messiah.
As singles play began the Dutchmen picked up right where they left off at doubles.
Grodzinski downed Brookhart in straight sets winning 6-4, 6-3 at the number one singles position.
Wismer fell to Van Scyoc 6-2, 6-2 at number two singles.
The only other Falcon falter came at the finals single matchup between Messiah's Brittingham and Lebanon Valley's Samuel Calabria. Calabria easily won 6-1, 6-4.
Wichert battled in a long three set match against Ryan Weitzel for the Dutchmen at number three singles. After dropping the first set 6-4, Wichert was able to find a way to win the second set in a tiebreaker 7-6 (7-3). The third set super tiebreaker it was all Wichert as he won in convincing fashion 10-4.
At number four singles Messiah's
Peter Shuck had the largest victory of the day for the Falcons defeating his foe in straight sets 6-0, 6-2.
The number five singles match was back and forth and led to a thrilling three set contest.
Zachary Brunner bested Joel Ramos in the first set 6-3. Ramos rebounded and did not surrender a game in the second set winning 6-0. Brunner was able to regather himself and took the final set 6-4 to win the match.
With the 6-3 loss the Falcons fell to 4-5 on the season and 2-2 in the Commonwealth Conference.
Messiah's next tennis match is in Grantham on Saturday, April 21st at 10:00 a.m. against the Knights of Arcadia University.
