Messiah Women Dominate Arcadia 8-1

Grantham, PA - The Messiah College women's tennis team dominated their match with Arcadia on Saturday winning by a score of 8-1.

With the threat of afternoon thunderstorms the match was moved up an extra 30 minutes and the Falcons were ready to play.

Messiah took two of the three doubles matches to take an early lead in the match.

Erin Ipsen and Sarah Brookhart got up to an early 3-0 lead against Arcadia at number one doubles. The Knights top team battled back to tie the match at three all. From that point on games went back and forth between teams and in the end Arcadia was able to pull out the match winning 9-7 in the pro set.

At number two doubles Ellen Harpold and Katelyn Clark also got out to an ealry lead but let the Knights back in the match. The pro set went to a tiebreaker and the Falcons second pairing were able to pull it out winning the set 9-8 (7-3).

The final doubles match was all Messiah. Jennifer Kitlan and Michelle Curtis handed the Knights third doubles team an 8-3 loss to give Messiah their second win at doubles.

Messiah entered singles matches with only one loss in the match, thats how they would finish it.

Ipsen had an unusual match at number one singles. Down 3-5 in the first set and on the brink of losing the set, Ipsen battled back to win 10 straight games and cruise to a straight set victory 7-5, 6-0.

Number three, four and six singles all were dominate performances by the Falcons.

Katelyn Clark won at number three singles 6-2, 6-2. Harpold only allowed four games to her opponent as well, winning 6-3, 6-1 at number four singles. Curtis, playing at six singles, came away with a 6-3, 6-2 victory for Messiah.

The final two singles matches would be decided in three sets.

At number two singles Sarah Brookhart lost the first set 6-1, but came all the way back to win the second set 6-3. In the third set super tiebreaker Brookhart jumped out to a lead and never looked back as she won the final set 10-4.

Jennifer Kitlan, at number five singles, also lost the first set to her opponent, falling 6-4. Kitlan completely turned the tables in the second set winning 6-1 and followed suit of Brookhart taking the super tiebreaker 10-4.

With the win Messiah picks up their first conference victory of the season and is now 5-8 overall.

The Falcons next match is on Thursday, April 26th against the Warriors of Lycoming at 3:30 p.m. at home.
