Gettysburg, PA - The Messiah College women's volleyball team opened its 2012 season by spitting four matches to finish 2-2 at the Gettysburg College Battlefield Classic this weekend.
The Falcons opened with a match on Friday that went the distance, and despite opening up a two-sets-to-none advantage, the Falcons fell to the Gallaudet University Bison, 3-2 (18-25, 19-25, 25-23, 25-18, 15-10).
“It's a really cool accomplishment and I'm truly honored to have achieved it with this team and at this school,” Rees said of the feat.
In their second match on Friday, the Falcons swept the Washington College Shoreman, 3-0 (25-22, 25-20, 25-17). Seniors
Lindsay King and
Lauren Rees combined for 17 kills on the match. Nevertheless, the stellar play of fellow senior
Megan Myers stood out. As she chipped in 10 kills in the win, coach
Judi Tobias took notice, describing Myers' tournament play as “astounding” and “very impressive.”
The Falcons returned to action on Saturday to face off against Dickinson College, beating the Red Devils in four sets, 3-1.
In the first set Falcons' senior
Lauren Rees knocked down her 1000
th career kill, which proved to be a major highlight of the weekend. Up 24-18 at the time, junior setter Jess Geib consistently found Rees for a Falcons rally. The senior scored on a tip to collect #1000, adding to an already-decorated career.
Later in the afternoon Messiah suffered a lost to Geneva College, 3-1, to finish out the Falcons' weekend play. The Falcons nonetheless remain positive about their play during the weekend tournament and look forward to working towards yet another successful year.
“We really wanted to start 4-0 (this weekend)”, Rees said. “But regardless of that we feel we played pretty well. We were really able to test our chemistry and get used to each other's tendencies.”
“While all our matches didn't necessarily go our way this weekend, we're very excited about the growth we've seen from our players thus far,” coach Tobias added. “All of the freshman received playing time and there is definitely a lot of potential in our freshmen and our entire squad. We know we're only going to get better as the season presses onward.”
Junior
Jessica Geib was voted to the tournament's All-Tournament team for her performance throughout the weekend. Geib collected 31 assists in the 3-0 win over Washington College on Friday.
Messiah (2-2, 0-0) opens their conference play this Wednesday, September 5
th, when they take on MAC rival Lycoming College (Williamsport, Pa.) at 7 p.m.
