St. Mary's City, MD. The Messiah College Falcons (7-6, 2-1) dropped both matches in their away tri match on Saturday, losing in four sets and three sets to St. Mary's College and John Hopkins University, respectively.
“Overall it was good game, without the results we wanted,” commented Coach
Judi Tobias on the match against St. Mary's. “Most of the sets were very close.”
The sets were close, Messiah dropped the first set 26-28. However, the Falcons did not back down from the Seahawks and stormed back to take the second set 25-17.
The third set would follow suit and be a tight contest as the Seahawks won 27-25. The Seahawks then went on to open up the fourth set with an 8-0 run and would close out the decisive set 25-17.
“We could have been able to use their block to get through to their defense better,” stated Coach Tobias on the loss to St. Mary's. “We had some serving errors but overall we did okay fundamentally.”
The Seahawks' Dani Thorne and Grace Chao split setting duties racking up 24 and 21 assists, respectively. Shelby Mullennix led all Seahawk hitters with 14 kills in the win.
Junior setter
Jessica Geib delivered 35 assists for Messiah against the Seahawks. Senior outside hitter
Lauren Rees led the Falcons' offense with 14 kills.
Messiah needed to re-group quickly as they would next take on undefeated Johns Hopkins. However the Blue Jays' attack and aggressive play would lead to a 3-0 victory over the Falcons: 25-9, 25-18, and 26-24.
“Johns Hopkins is a really solid team and they have a really quick offense,” stated Coach Tobias. “They came out very explosive. We did settle down but they just have a lot of hitters in a lot of places. They are also very good at capitalizing on your weaknesses”
John Hopkins' aggressive offense was led by Jasmine Warmington who tallied 13 kills.
The Falcons were again anchored by Geib who delivered 13 assists and also led Messiah with eight kills.
Johns Hopkins won the neutral match against host St. Mary's College of Maryland in five sets: 17-15, 19-25, 25-20, 25-14, and 15-9.
The Falcons return to conference play on Tuesday September 25th when they travel to Reading, Pa., to face Alvernia University (5-5, 2-1).
