Grantham, Pa- The Messiah College Falcons (5-2, 1-0) hosted the Lancaster Bible College Chargers (0-5) and the Haverford College Fords (4-2) in the Falcons' first Tri-match of the season. Messiah held court in their first match against the Chargers winning in straight sets 25-9, 25-17, and 25-22. In Messiah's second match, the Falcons were pushed to five sets but came out on top 25-16, 24-26, 25-15, 24-26 and 15-12.
The Falcons set the tone early in their match against Lancaster Bible College by jumping to an early 13-6 lead before a Charger time out was called. Messiah then went on to finish the set on a 12-3 run. Messiah continued to roll in the following two sets keeping the Chargers off-balanced with a fast offense, consistent passing and a solid defensive effort.
Junior
Jessica Geib proved productive against the Chargers in two sets of service, tallying 11 assists, 6 digs and 2 aces. Freshman
Alyssa Vorbeck led the team with 7 kills for the match.
In the Falcon's second match against Haverford, the team came out strong with a 5-0 run and did not look back finishing off the set 25-16. Messiah and Haverford would go back and forth in the next three sets squaring the match at two a piece entering into a fifth decisive set.
“This set is about attitude,” Coach
Judi Tobias told her players about the fifth set. “This is about digging your heals in and refusing to lose”.
Despite falling behind early 5-9, the Falcons did just as Coach Tobias instructed and dug in, winning 15-12.
Junior
Jessica Geib ran a potent Falcon offense dishing out 41 assists and added 18 digs. Senior
Lauren Rees recorded 21 kills, 13 digs and 4 blocks in the win.
In the neutral match between Lancaster Bible College and Haverford College, the Fords won in straight sets 25-14, 25-12 and 25-20.
Following the Tri-match, Messiah improves to 5-2 on the season. The Falcons will next travel to face Commonwealth rival Lebanon Valley College (5-2, 1-0) on Tuesday September 11 and continue conference play.
