Box Score

Chester, PA – The Messiah College Falcons (2-4, 0-1) started off their 2013 Commonwealth Conference schedule with a tough 10-1 loss at the hands of perennial conference powerhouse Widener University (4-3, 1-0) Saturday afternoon.

In a game where their top-three goal scorers were sidelined with injuries, the Falcons managed to muster just 16 shots on net, eight coming off the stick of Tyler Goglio, a team-high.

The Falcons' lone goal came late in the third quarter from Chris Bry. The freshman attackman dodged hard to front of the net, sending a shot between opposing goalie Mac Nestler's legs during a 30-second shot clock situation. The tally was just the first of the season for Bry, and the first of his career.

A bright spot for the Falcons came between the pipes. Both Brooks Arnold and Jon Weimer combined for 20 saves in the game. Weimer stepped in after halftime in relief of Arnold and allowed just two goals over the game's final thirty minutes while collecting 10 saves.

Johnny Casey's two goals and three assists led the Pride offensively. Tim Taylor added three first half goals for the Pride and Nestler made eight stops in cage.

The Pride put up matching four spots on the stat sheet over the game's first thirty minutes, taking an 8-0 lead into the break. Bry's goal in the third provided a spark for the Falcons, as their shot totals increased. Unfortunately, the Falcons offense just couldn't find the back of the net and the early deficit proved to be too much for the visitors.

In a matchup historically known for its physical nature, the Falcons and Pride combined for just four penalties. Neither team, however, could convert on their extra-man opportunities.

The Falcons will get a break from conference play before the Easter holiday as Eastern University travels to Grantham on Thursday, March 28. The opening faceoff is slated for 7 p.m. on Anderson Field.
