Grantham, PA - The Crusaders of Alvernia University fall to the Falcons on a cold, windy day by a score of 7-2. The team swept the doubles matches to give them some good momentum going into the singles.
This is the second match in a row that the Falcons have won 7-2 and started out the day with three doubles wins. The biggest win for the team came from the freshman and senior combination of
Molly Brubaker and
Ellen Harpold. They defeated Jennifer Petrilla and Jennifer Innamorato by a score of 8-1.
"They just played really well today," said head coach
Jon Arosell about the Brubaker/Harpold duo. "It seemed like they didn't miss any shots out there."
It was also a great doubles win for
Erin Ipsen and
Eileen Barker as they faced tough Crusader opponents. One of which, Julie Seidel, would go on to defeat
Erin Ipsen in the singles matches without giving up a game. Never-the-less, the duo won their match well with a score of 8-3.
"It was really good to see Ipsen and Barker finish strong against those two," said coach Arosell about their doubles match. "They started coming to the net a lot more and forced them to miss shots."
Jen Kitlan and
Katelyn Clark won key tiebreakers for the team in singles matches. Kitlan's tiebreak came in the second set after taking the first 6-2. Innamorato was charging back in the second, looking to take the match to a final third. Kitlan held on in the end to win the tiebreak 7-4. In Clark's match against Lillian Hussar, she lost a first set tiebreak and then won the second set 6-2. However, she then won the third-set tiebreak 10-4.
Perhaps the most exciting match of the day came from
Molly Brubaker and Jennifer Petrilla. The first set was a great battle between the two and ultimately went to Petrilla 6-4. Brubaker dominated the second set and took that one handily, 6-1. They elected to play a full third set; a good decision for the two evenly matched opponents. They battled back and forth, much like the first set, but Brubaker proved the stronger one of the two today winning 7-5.
The win moves the Falcons to 3-4 for the spring season, now riding a three-match winning streak. The loss takes Alvernia to 2-5 overall in the spring season. The next match for the team will be on April 9, at Lycoming College.
