Box Score

Carlisle, PA - Messiah College baseball earned their first win of the season on Tuesday, as they defeated Dickinson College 7-1 to hault a four game losing streal. Evan Young was brilliant in his first start of the season, as he completed seven innings and allowed just three hits, a walk, and a single earned run.

Messiah entered the game looking to end a season-opening, four game losing streak—and Young delivered. He breezed through the first six innings, allowing just a single and a walk. He also worked around single-base errors in the first, second, and fifth innings by the infield, not allowing a Dickinson runner to reach second base until the fifth inning.

Young's first real trouble came in his final inning of work, when he lost the shutout after allowing a double and single to consecutive batters with one out. He recovered by inducing a lineout before collecting his fifth strikeout to end the frame.

By the time the Red Devils managed to break through against Young, the Falcons had already scored seven times. Five of those runs came between the fourth and fifth innings, with Ben Sollenberger giving Messiah a 5-0 lead with a two-run single to right field in the top of the fifth. David Sletta also collected two RBIs—one each in the fourth inning (single) and fifth inning (double).

Casey Ebersole pushed Messiah's lead to 7-0 in the seventh inning, as his one-out single chased home Derek Drake from second base.

Every Falcon had at least one hit, with Ebersole (2), Sletta (2), Jon Heisey (2), Jacob Sprengle (2), and Sollenberger (3) each registering multi-hit games.

But apparently, the Messiah pitching didn't need all the support.

Young dropped his ERA to 1.69 with his seven strong innings, and was followed up by a dominant outing from reliever Adam Marshall. He struck out two batters in the eighth inning and, after allowing back-to-back hits with one out in the ninth, ended the game by striking out two more.

Marshall has now appeared in every game for the Falcons this season.

With the win-- and the snow coming-- Messiah will now prepare for their annual spring break trip to Flordia, with games set to begin next week Monday.
