Elizabethtown, PA - Messiah College men's and women's tennis fell to rival Elizabethown College on Saturday, as the Blue Jays' took 9-0 (women) and 6-3 (men) decisions on their home courts. The men managed just two singles wins and a win in the No. 1 doubles.
The Messiah women performed well in the doubles matches, but couldn't come up with the win in any of them. Playing well recently is
Molly Brubaker and
Ellen Harpold, they managed an 8-5 decision against Kristi Noecker and Adriana Scotto.
Erin Ipsen and
Eileen Barker won half of their games in an 8-4 loss to Madison Pipkin and Allison Burkhardt.
The story was similar for the singles side of things for the women. Many of the Falcons played well, but the wins didn't go their way today. In the No. 2 slot, Brubaker started off with a 6-4 loss, dropping one break, and lost the second set 6-3. Barker also lost her first set 6-4, then she came back wanting in the second set but still lost 7-5.
Jennifer Kitlan was the third Falcon that dropped her first set 6-4, unfortunately after going down 1-0 in the second, she had to retire from the match.
On the men's side,
Michael Brookhart and
Luke Hostetter started the day off well with an 8-5 win in their doubles match. That win would be the only one for the team in the doubles portion of the competition though.
David Wichert and
Zachary Brunner lost to Cole Turula and Michael Cannon with an 8-4 total.
Brookhart and Wichert were the two men to provide wins for the Falcons in the singles matches. Brookhart had to fight for his win today against Josh Riehl, taking the first set 7-5 and following that with a 6-4 victory in the second set. Wichert won a little more handily, defeating Cannon with scores of 6-1 and 6-2. It was a tough day for the rest of the team, facing a very competent Blue Jays squad.
With the wins, both Elizabethtown teams clinch the No. 1 seed in the Commonwealth Conference playoffs. The loss for the Messiah men drops them to 3-1 in the conference this season, with the women falling to 3-2.
The next match for the men will be on Monday, Apr. 22, at Hood College, the women will have to wait until next Saturday, Apr. 27, to face off against the Lions of Albright College.
