Chester, PA - Messiah College's offense was stifled in Game Two of the Falcons' double-header at Widener on Saturday, with their 3-0 defeat shutting them out of the Commonwealth Championships Tournament. The Pride took a 1-0 lead with an unearned run in the first inning, and added two huge insurance runs by way of a sixth inning homerun.
The Falcons' defeat dropped them to 11-10 in the Commonwealth-- an identical record with Widener in the league standings. Widener advances into the conference playoffs, however, by way of the head-to-head tiebreaker from this weekend's series.
Starting pitcher
Evan Young tended the mound for the Falcons, registering five strikeouts while allowing three runs on four hits.
Game One
Messiah College baseball went down 6-0 early in Game One against Widener University, but battled all the way back to take an 8-7 victory.
Messiah produced two dominant innings as the Falcons' bats heated up.
David Sletta scored Messiah's first run of the day in the top of the third after
Jacob Sprengle grounded out to second base.
Paul Mellinger cut the Pride's lead to 6-3 with a 2 RBI single to left field.
Sletta would initiate the Falcons' rally in the top of the sixth inning with a leadoff single to left field.
Matt Turman continued the momentum with a double to left center. Sletta would score by way of a sacrifice fly off the bat of
Zach Brubaker.
Ben Sollenberger would then pitch in with an RBI single through the left side to keep the Falcons' offense rolling.
Casey Ebersole cleared the bases with a two-out double, putting Messiah ahead 8-6.
Although Widener took back a run in the sixth to make it 8-7, starting pitcher
Jon Lapp escaped a seventh inning push by the Pride to pick up his sixth win of the season.
Ebersole led the Falcons in game one of Saturday's doubleheader as he went 2-4 with 3 RBI.
The Falcons will conclude their regular season with a contest at Gettysburg College on Monday, Apr. 29. The first pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
