2013 IWLCA All-Region Teams
Grand Lake, CO – Today the IWLCA released the All-Region teams with four Falcons being represented, two on the First Team and two on the Second Team in the Metro region.
Maddie Comfort and classmate
Cecilia Kjellman led the way on the First team, while
Lizzy Keeney and
Taylor Phillips were honored with making the Second Team.
The announcement comes after the Falcons finished up one of the toughest seasons they have ever played. Messiah's schedule this year included five opponents ranked in the IWLCA Top 20. Not to mention they saw the loss of two
All-Region players from last year's team,
Rachel Dirksen and
Rachel Coyle.
Despite the odds being slightly stacked against them, the Falcons still churned out a 10-7 overall record and a 7-1 conference record. They also saw big wins against the University of Mary Washington and York College (Pa.).
Comfort led the team from the defense and midfield this season with 46 ground balls and 32 caused turnovers. She kept the ball in the Falcons' sticks, giving other players the opportunity to put numbers on the scoreboard. Comfort was also second on the team in draw controls with 57.
Kjellman, the other First Team All-Region member, was also crucial from the midfield with her 40 ground balls. She made a big impact on the offense as well with 40 goals and 20 assists.
Senior goaltender,
Taylor Phillips, was a big factor to the Falcons' success this season. She finished with a 9.44 goals against average, 108 saves, and a .430 save percentage. This is her second All-Region Second Team selection in two years.
The only non-senior selection for the Falcons this year,
Lizzy Keeney, was the main goal-scorer for the team. She ended with 59 goals and 16 assists. Keeney not only led the team in goals though, she was the go to for draw controls, winning 84. Keeney was selected to the First Team in last year's All-Region selections.
