XML Box Score 2 Grantham, PA - Messiah College started their 2013 season with two marks in the win column on Saturday, as they swept PSU-Fayette 3-0 and Marymount University 3-0. The Falcons received stellar play from setter
Jessica Geib and impressive contributions from a number of younger players including
Jane Underman and
Kristen Douglas.
Game one vs. PSU-Fayette
The Falcons lept out to an early 8-2 lead in game one thanks to the play from
Jordyn Scheib at the service line. PSU-Fayette would come back from that deficit soon after to go on an 11-5 run and tie the game at 13. Messiah took the lead back after that point and never looked back, finishing out the opening game by the score of 25-17.
PSU-Fayette helped out the Falcons in the first game by committing eight attacking errors. This fact would prove to be part of the Roaring Lions' downfall for the match, as they received 22 in total.
After the Falcons took the lead in game two at 5-4, they didn't give it up.
Jessica Geib was on target with all of her sets; only twelve of them resulted in attacking errors in the match. Messiah eventually went up to a 17-9 lead in game two due to the hitting of Underman, Douglas, and
Hannah Baumer. Game two ended with three straight kills by Underman, part of her 11 for the match.
Game three of the match was kept close by both teams until the Falcons found themselves on a 5-0 run, due to the connections made between Geib and Douglas. Douglas also helped out on the defensive side of the match, collecting a team-high 10 digs. Messiah saw the light at the end of the tunnel after their run and closed out the game and match with another 25-17 score.
Douglas finished the match with an attack percentage of .500; Underman just under that with .435. Janelle Cooper and Megan Manack, each with five, led the Roaring Lions in kills.
Game two vs. Marymount
For the second time in the same day, the Falcons swept their opponent with a 3-0 victory. Leading the way in attacking against the Saints were both
Jordyn Scheib and
Kristen Douglas with 10 kills each.
Messiah kept the momentum on their side of the court in game one, holding the lead for the duration of the game. The Falcons were also able to put together long runs of four and five points at a time giving themselves a cushion over the Saints.
Game two started out with the same theme, opening with a 7-0 run and stretching that to 12-3. A couple of long runs from the Saints later in the game closed that deficit but it wasn't enough to come away with the win. Messiah took a 2-0 lead in the match by winning game two 25-17.
Jessica Geib had another solid match with 29 assists and five kills. Her five kills came by way of some creative tipping when going for the second ball.
Jane Underman also tallied another five kills in this match.
On the defensive side of the match, three players led the team in digs with 10:
Allison Hill,
Kristen Douglas, and
Jessica Geib.
Marymount made things a lot more interesting in game three, staying right with Messiah until the very end. The Saints went out to lead the game 4-1 but Messiah came right back to tie it at five. They stayed level throughout the game until the Falcons held a 21-17 lead. Some attacking errors by Messiah coupled with an ace from the Saints led to a 5-0 run and a one-point lead for Marymount. Messiah once again jumped right back though, and ended the game and match with a 4-1 run, winning 25-23.
The Falcons will look to keep their undefeated record when they face conference foe Lycoming College at 7:00 p.m., here in Brubaker Auditorium, on Wednesday Sept. 4.
