York, PA - The women found success at York College (Pa.) today to open up the 2013-14 season, winning 6-3. The men fell to the Spartans by the same score, also opening up their new season.
The Falcons defeated the Spartans in two out of three doubles matches and four of the six singles matches on the women's side.
Molly Brubaker secured the win from the No. 1 spot and
Jenna Shotmeyer got her first win as a Falcon at No. 5.
Jennifer Kitlan and
Lily Horner were able to defeat their opponents in the No. 2 doubles match by a score of 8-0. However
Eileen Barker and
Molly Brubaker had to battle it out until the very end in a 9-8 (7-2) decision.
The men's side was a battle for wins throughout the whole match; three of the six singles matches were forced into a third set and the two doubles matches that were lost were by only two games.
Michael Brookhart and
David Wichert were the victors in the No. 1 and No. 2 slots, respectively.
Brookhart's opponent had to retire when they were 3-3 in the third set with one set each, giving the junior the win. One other retirement happened in the day, which unfortunately was from
Zachary Brunner against Daniel Erk. Despite that, every match that occurred was very close and could have gone either way.
The women will start out the season 1-0, and the men 0-1. Only one more match remains in the fall before their individual championships in October. That match will come on Sept. 28 at Gettysburg College at 12 p.m.
