Old Friends Crossover Not Friendly To Messiah, Drop Two

XML Box Score 1 | XML Box Score 2 Selinsgrove, PA - Messiah volleyball lost two matches Friday night at the Old Friends Crossover to Moravian College and Susquehanna University. Their first match against Moravian went down to the wire in a five-setter, 3-2. Later in the evening, the Falcons faced a 9-1 Susquehanna team and fell 3-1.
 
Messiah vs. Moravian

The Greyhounds and Falcons played five very close sets with each other; three of the five had to go past the 25-point limit, including a set one loss 29-27. Messiah appeared to have the momentum after set two though, when they won by a ten-point margin 25-15. The two teams then traded scores for sets three and four with a win and a loss each at 28-26. Ultimately Moravian held the advantage down the home stretch, winning set five 15-12.
 
In total, Moravian was able to get 32 more attacking attempts than Messiah in the match, 209-177. The Falcons held a slight lead in attacking percentage though, .136 to .134. For the second match in a row, Taylor Hook went into double digit kills and led the team with 16. Classmate Jane Underman was second on the team with 12.
 
The two opposing setters matched each other almost exactly; Jessica Geib collected 45 assists while Kelly Brown put up 46. The two also dug 17 balls each and were the only players on their teams to give up their only ball handling error.
 
Lauren Hostetler led the Greyhounds in attacking with 18 kills, followed by Taylor Kornmann with 16.
 
The loss dropped the Falcons to 4-2 overall and lifted the Greyhounds to 5-5.
 
Messiah vs. Susquehanna
 
The Falcons weren't able to achieve the close scores against the Crusaders like they did against Moravian. Despite winning the second set 25-20, they lost the other three with scores of 25-15, 25-18, and 25-19.
 
The Crusaders appeared to have the upper hand on the defensive side of the court, digging 106 balls compared to the Falcons' 75. Susquehanna's Sarah Paluck was the biggest contributor to that number, putting up 33 by herself.
 
The duo of Jane Underman and Kristen Douglas led the way in kills for this match with 12 and 10, respectively. Jessica Geib collected another 39 assists and Allison Hill led the team in digs with 20.

Messiah's record falls to 4-3 overall, while Susquehanna's improves to 10-1, and will look to snap their losing streak with a match against Gettysburg College on Sept. 17 in Grantham, Pa.
