XML Box Score Stevenson, MD – Women's volleyball fell to the No. 22 Stevenson University Mustangs today with a 3-1 final score (25-18, 21-25, 16-25, 22-25). After an outstanding first set victory (25-18) with only one attacking error given up, the Mustangs got on top of their play and took the next three sets.
The set one loss for the Mustangs is just their second set loss in their 15 games played so far this season. Attacking errors was a big factor in that game; the Falcons committed just one compared to the Mustangs' seven.
Kristen Douglas recorded nine kills in the first set when it seemed Messiah could do no wrong. Douglas finished the match with 16 and a percentage of .289 to lead the team.
Alyssa Vorbeck recorded her best match of the season in hitting with eight kills and no errors on just 12 attempts.
Messiah got the better of the Mustangs in attacking errors with 23 against 28. The Falcons were also better on defense with 90 digs to 87.
Natasha Gibble led that effort with 17 total.
In sets two and three, the Falcons just didn't have the same spark that they played with in the first set. They could not get the momentum that they needed from the attacking side and couldn't break the runs by Stevenson.
The Falcons stayed right with the Mustangs in set #4 however, coming back from a 16-9 deficit and eventually took the lead 22-21. Unfortunately Messiah couldn't stop Christine Isenberg from getting four kills in a row to end the set and the match.
Isenberg led the Mustangs on offense with 17 kills on 49 attempts. Isenberg also recorded 16 digs. Jessica Gieselman recorded 44 assists in the match.
With the result Messiah falls to 4-5 overall this season and 1-2 in the conference. Stevenson University improved their overall record to 15-0 and 4-0 in the Commonwealth. The Falcons will come back to Grantham this Saturday, Sept. 21, for a match against St. Mary's College of Md.
