Grantham, PA - After a mid-week loss to Ursinus College 2-1, Messiah College was looking to start conference play on the right foot. Behind persistent offensive pressure and a solid defensive performance, four different Messiah players scored en route to a 5-0 victory over Alvernia University.
Â
From the opening whistle, Messiah turned their offense into overdrive behind an early goal from
Moriah Pfautz. Off a penalty corner play at the 2:14 mark,
Gina Kellett's shot was saved by Rebecca Brosious; Pfautz, who returned Saturday after missing a couple games with inury, guided the rebound into the net for her third goal on the season.
Â
After Messiah's early goal, Alvernia moved down the field looking for the quick equalizer, but
Molly Gebrosky made the save—her first of two on the afternoon— to protect the scoreline.
Â
In the 25th minute, Messiah's cohesive passing led to their second goal.
Brooke Sands crossed the ball to
Jennie Kamel who doubled Messiah's lead and scored her first collegiate goal.
Â
While freshmen led the Falcons' first two goals,
Caroline Wulf scored Messiah's next two goals. On the first goal, Wulf whiffed her first shot attempt, but her second try was successful near the left side of the cage and put Messiah up 3-0 at the 31:04 mark. Messiah would dominate the rest of the first half while outshooting the Crusaders 17-3 and out cornering them 7-0.
Â
At the intermission, Messiah lead 3-0 and
Angela Klaczak replaced Gebrosky for the entire second half.
Â
In the second-half and 21:18 after her first goal, Wulf received the ball off a dangerous penalty corner from Kellett's pass and sent it past the end line and into the cage. The Falcons added their fifth goal off yet another penalty corner.
Jenna Bretz found the ball, deked past a defender and scored her season's first goal (second of career).
Â
Interestingly enough, Wulf's sister Corinne Wulf scored in Saturday's Messiah Women's Soccer 4-0 victory against Grove City. This is the first time that both Caroline and Corinne scored on the same day. Additionally, it was both players' first goal on the year.
Â
Behind a great all-around effort, Messiah defeated Alvernia 5-0 and improves to 1-0 in conference play and moves to 5-2 overall. Messiah remains home and takes on Eastern University at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 2.
Â
"Eastern is always a formidable opponent," Coach
Brooke Good looking ahead to Wednesday's match against Eastern. "We are excited to have them on our turf, but they are also a skilled team. As a team, we need to strive to improve in every practice and game."
