Messiah Splits Four Matches At Worthington Classic

Washington, D.C. - Messiah College goes 2-2 on Friday and Saturday at Gallaudet University against Whittier College, Catholic University, University of Mary Washington, and Gallaudet University. The annual Worthington Classic consists of two pools of four teams each. Whittier took home the title this year, going 4-0 without dropping a set.

Messiah first had to face Whittier in their pool and, despite a very close first set, lost 3-0 to the Poets.

The Falcons dropped the first set 26-24 before losing by nine points and 10 points, respectively, in the next two sets. Kristen Douglas led Messiah with seven kills while Jessica Geib put up 24 assists. Douglas added 19 digs to lead the defensive effort. Whittier's Alayna Rigo led the attacking for them, collecting 18 kills on 41 attempts.

Later on Friday night, Messiah returned the sweep to Catholic University, winning in straight-sets 25-21, 25-23, and 25-17. The Falcons recorded 43 kills in total, led once again by Kristen Douglas, with 10 kills. She was followed by Hannah Baumer and Jane Underman, each with eight kills.

Jessica Geib assisted on 38 of the 43 kills, one of her highest totals this season for a three-set match. With the 1-1 record for the day Friday, the Falcons brought up their overall record to 7-6 and found themselves tied for second place in the pool with the University of Mary Washington.

The Falcons narrowly lost their first match of the day Saturday to the Eagles of Mary Washington, 3-2 (26-28, 25-23, 14-25, 25-21, 15-12).

Messiah matched their previous kill total against Catholic, with 43, however Mary Washington was able to put away 54. The two teams were even in digs, each with 72. Douglas again led the Falcons in attacking with 15 kills, followed by Alyssa Vorbeck with 10.

In the second game of the day, Messiah matched up against the hosts, Gallaudet University, and the Falcons won 3-1 (25-15, 25-18, 23-25, 25-18), bringing their overall record for the tournament to 2-2. Last season the Falcons went 3-1 overall and also beat Gallaudet in their final match, 3-1.

Leading the attacking in the match was Jane Underman with 13 kills, followed by Vorbeck with 11. Geib added 40 assists with seven kills. Allison Hill and Douglas led from the defense with 21 digs each.

Douglas now leads the team in both kills (153) and digs (208) for the season. In the tournament, she was named to the All-Tournament team, with MVP belonging to Rigo of Whittier.

Messiah now holds an overall record of 8-7 with the results this weekend and will look ahead to their conference-match on Tuesday (10/2) at Albright College at 7:00 p.m.
