XML Box Score Frederick, MD - The women's basketball team earned their third straight conference victory Saturday over Hood College 77-40. The Falcons' offense was on-the-mark, shooting an impressive 45% from the field (25-56), 57% from three (8-14), and 83% in free throws (19-23).
The Falcons (11-6, 7-3) came out and used a 13-2 clip to take a quick double digit lead after only three minutes of play. Later in the half, the Blazers (5-12, 2-8) scored five straight points to pull within seven, but the offensive arsenal of
Taylor Miller and
Chelsea Danel wouldn't have it. In the final five minutes of the half, the dynamic duo knocked down three triples (Miller -2, Danel -1) and Miller added a jumper to give the Falcons a solid 15 points lead at the break.
"Taylor and Chelsea shot really well in the first half," head coach
Mike Miller said. "They made up for the fact that we didn't play as well as we would have liked. We refocused in the locker room and were just great in the second half."
In the first half,
Taylor Miller scored 14 points and shot an impressive 80% (4-for-5) from three, while
Chelsea Danel added 10 points and was 2-for-4 from three.
The Falcons extended their lead in the opening of the second half by scoring 13 unanswered points.
Gillian Glackin scored four consecutive points and was followed by
Hannah Nichols' two free throws.
Sienna Wisse added a layup and a three to give Messiah the 47-21 advantage.
"Sienna had a nice game today," Miller said. "She really shot well and made good decisions. Overall, I was really pleased with the way we executed in the second half."
Defensively, the Falcons caused Hood to turn the ball over four times and held the Blazers scoreless through the first five minutes of the half.
Messiah poured it on offensively through the remaining 15 minutes, amassing a 30-plus point lead toward the latter end of the half.
Gillian Glackin ended the game with 14 points and brought in 14 rebounds for her seventh double-double of the season.
Sienna Wisse and
Chelsea Danel each contributed 10 points.
On a day where both teams found themselves in the double bonus, the Falcons showed great confidence from the free throw line.
Hannah Nichols,
Gillian Glackin,
Katelyn Vanderhoff, and
Jocelyn Chavous were each perfect from the charity stripe.
"Today was a full team effort," Miller said. "All 14 people contributed and played well. It's a great way to begin the second half of our season."
The Falcons return to Brubaker Auditorium on next Wednesday when they host Elizabethtown College. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
