Grantham, PA - Three different Falcons tallied three separate goals to lead Messiah to a 3-0 win over Alvernia University on Wednedsay night on Shoemaker Field. The win moved the No. 1 Falcons into Saturday's Commonwealth Championship game, where they will host Lycoming College at 6:00 p.m.
Mike Kovach scored the game's first goal in the ninth minute with a header past keeper Zach Rider, with
Bryant Myer collecting the assist by way of a serve from the left side. The goal was Kovach's ninth of the season, and guaranteed the game would not be similar to the one the two teams played last week; Kovach's early goal was a contrast to
Jeremy Payne's game-winner in a 1-0 win over the Crusaders on Oct. 28.
Fifteen minutes after Kovach's goal the Falcons doubled the lead off a corner kick score from
Brian Ramirez. The heavy fog on the field may have provide some fortune on the tally, as the ball bounced sharply to the near post where
Matt Kyne flicked it over the goal line before anyone else could react. The tally was the first of his career, and Messiah held the 2-0 advantage through the intermission.
In the 59th minute
Colby Thomas tallied his fifth goal of the season to put Messiah up 3-0. The play started up 40 yards out in the midfield as
Carter Robbins put a through ball into the right side of the box for Payne. The Messiah forward cut into the endline and slotted back to Thomas for a one-touch strike past Rider into the back of the net.
The Falcons win pushed their overall record to 18-0-1, while Alvernia fell to 11-8-2. The loss may very well have ended the Crusaders' season as they're unlikely to receive a bid into the NCAA Championships Tournament.
As for Messiah, they will look avenge last season's Commonwealth Semifinal defeat to Lycoming when they host the Warriors on Saturday. Lycoming advanced into the match with a 3-2 win in overtime over Arcadia University earlier this afternoon.
As mentioned, game time for Saturday is set for 6:00 p.m.
