Zac Hoy hit three of four free-throws in the final minute to help Messiah finish on top.
Luke Cable added 17 points and four assists for the Falcons, and Hoy finished with 12 points and seven assists.
Geoff Boyle scored 16 points and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.
Fernandez added six steals to his team-leading point total.
The win pushed Messiah to 7-3 on the season.
The Falcons will next play on Wednesday at 12:00 noon in their second game of the Miami Adidas Slam. They will be opposed by Eastern Connecticut State, a team they
beat 72-71 in overtime two years ago in the same tourney.
