Men Stopped In Season Opener At Gettysburg

XML Box Score Gettysburg, PA - Messiah College fell in their 2014 season opener to No. 20 Gettysburg College with a score of 12-1. Chris Bry netted the only goal for the Falcons in the third period. Robby Maddux for the Bullets put away four goals in the game.
 
The Falcons started out the game right with a faceoff win by Dean Patton and held the Bullets to a one-goal lead through the first quarter. With about three minutes left in the quarter, Gettysburg committed a slashing penalty to give the Falcons the extra-man opportunity to try to tie the game. Messiah couldn't get any shots on the power play but Brooks Arnold kept Messiah in the game with three saves throughout the quarter.
 
Gettysburg opened up the scoring in the second period though, scoring two goals within 1:05 of the start. Three more goals were added before the end of the half by Gettysburg in between flurries of shots from the Falcons. In four minutes of play, Messiah took ten shots without any of them finding their way between the pipes.
 
Between Bullets keepers Jon Maddalone and Jake Adoni, 12 saves were made throughout the game. For the Falcons, Brooks Arnold made 11 saves on 39 shots. Messiah took just eight less shots than the Bullets for 31 in the game.
 
The Bullets continued the pressure throughout the third quarter, scoring another five goals, three of them within two minutes of each other. The Falcons found two more extra-man opportunities in the quarter, capitalizing on the first with a goal by Chris Bry. Bry picked up a ground ball after a missed shot by Andrew Harris and put it behind Maddalone for the goal.
 
Gettysburg added one more goal in the fourth to cap off the scoring. Messiah attempted to put a higher number on the board with shots coming until the final whistle but Jake Adoni added four saves to Maddalone's eight, keeping the Falcons to one goal.
 
The Falcons picked up 28 ground balls in the game, led by Drew Pagenkopf (4). Messiah was 7-17 from the faceoff X, had four caused turnovers, and was 10-16 on clearing attempts. Bry led the team in shots with seven and he was followed by Harris and Tyler Goglio with six each.
 
Messiah will look to rebound from the early season loss with a game on Wednesday, Feb. 26, at Marymount University at 7:00 p.m.
