Ninth Inning Comeback Not Enough in Loss to Widener

Chester, PA - Widener University won in dramatic fashion in the bottom of the ninth inning on Kyle Summers' walk-off sac fly for an 8-7 victory over Messiah College. The Falcons dropped to 15-14 on the season and 11-8 in the Commonwealth Conference. With the win the Pride moved to 25-11 on the season and 14-5 in the Conference.

The Falcons struck first in the top of the first inning with a single to left field by Derek Drake that drove in Joe Saufley from third. But Widener came back in their half of the first to score two runs. Michael Elfreth scored the first run for the Pride on two errors by Messiah and Bob Barnett scored on a RBI single by Michael Riverso.

Messiah knotted the game at two in the fourth inning when Jacob Sprengle scored on an error.

But in the fifth inning Widener opened up their lead on two key errors by the Falcons and Greg McDonough's two run single down the right field line.

Messiah came alive in the top of the ninth inning by scoring four runs to tie the game at seven. Jon Lapp scored on an error committed by the Pride's third baseman. Sprengle tied the game at seven on a three-run double down the right field line.

With the loss, Adam Marshall fell to 1-4 on the year. Evan Young was given the no decision after pitching six and a third innings and giving up seven runs (three earned) on eight hits.

The Falcons will face Widener again tomorrow at 12:00 p.m. for a doubleheader at home.
