XML Box Score 2 Grantham, PA - Messiah College dropped two games to Widener on Saturday, and lost three in a row this weekend to the Pride to finish the regular-season at 11-10 in the Commonwealth Conferece. The Falcons will enter next weekend's conference tournament as the No. 3 seed by way of a tie-breaker with Lebanon Valley, who also finished 11-10 in the conference.
Game One Messiah went down 2-0 in the top of the first inning but earned one back on a
Ben Sollenberger double in their first at-bat. Unfortunately the Pride went up 4-1 in the second inning and eventually took a 9-2 lead with a three-run seventh.
The Falcons put together a two run rally in the bottom of the seventh to make it 9-4 before leaving the bases-loaded to end the game.
Steven Ridings (3-3) was roughed up over four innings; the starter allowed six earned runs on seven hits.
Zach Luman (2.1 IP, three earned runs) and
Colby Helgerson (0.2 IP) relieved Ridings.
Sollenberger,
Jacob Sprengle, and
Jon Mullin all went 3-4 at the plate with Mullin hitting his first home run.
Game Two After combining for 13 runs in Game One, the Falcons and Pride battled to a 1-0 game in favor of the visitors.
Jon Lapp was magnificent for Messiah, finishing six innings and allowing just three hits, a single run, and zero walks against four strikeouts.
Lapp's relented his one run in the sixth inning when a two out single went just out of the reach of a diving
Casey Ebersole at shortstop and into centerfield for an RBI.
The Falcons came inches from tying the game with two outs in the bottom of the seventh when Joshua Good hit a deep drive to straight away center. With
Jacob Sprengle rounding the bases from first, Sam Christie made an incredible catch over his shoulder while crossing onto the warning track.
Lapp took the hard-luck loss and fell to 2-3 while the Falcons managed just two hits. Colin Weiss pitched all seven innings for Widener and moved to 6-0.
Widener moved to 16-5 in the conference and will enter next weekend's tournament as the No. 1 seed.
