Men's Results I
Women's ResultsAnnville, PA - The men's and women's tennis teams competed in their final regular season matches Saturday against Lebanon Valley College. The men continued their dominance against Commonwealth opponents, taking the lopsided win 8-1. The women were less fortunate, suffering the 7-2 loss.
The men won five of six singles matches and dominated all three doubles competitions. Four different Falcons -
Devin Esch,
David Wichert, Chris Brittingham, and
Dustin Innerst - picked up singles wins to remain undefeated in the Commonwealth.
No. 2 Wichert and No. 6 Innerst cruised to two set victories, picking up 6-3, 6-1 and 6-1, 6-0 wins, respectively. The rest of the Falcons had a more challenging time against the Dutchmen.
No. 3
Peter Shuck dropped his match to Sam Calabria, despite taking the second set to a tie break 6-4, 7-6 (8-6), while No. 3 Brittingham defeated Cody Manmiller in three sets. He dropped the first set 1-6, then battled to win the next two sets 6-3, 10-8.
At No. 4, Esch also dropped the first set 6-7 (4-7), but regained his composure to take the second and third sets over Andrew Wilson 6-0, 10-7.
But the most eventful singles match came at the No.1 spot. Despite dropping the second set 1-6 and being pushed to tie breaks in both the first and third sets,
Michael Brookhart's battle was not in vain. He pulled through for the win over Ryan Weitzel 7-6 (7-5), 1-6, 7-6 (8-6).
In doubles play, No. 1 Brookhart/Wichert and No. 2 Shuck/
Zachary Brunner edged their opponents 8-6, while No. 3 Innerst/
Michael Kovacs won 5-8.
The women earned a singles win and a doubles win against Lebanon Valley. No. 5
Michelle Curtis was the lone victor for the Falcons as she defeated Nicole Kracum 6-4, 6-1. No. 3
Hanna Lazio and
Sydney Schandel defeated the duo of Lauren Shanberg and Lori Noble for the 8-4 doubles win.
Both teams will move on to the Commonwealth Conference Championships next week. The men (8-6, 6-0) hold the No. 1 seed after going undefeated in the Conference for the first time since the 2007-2008 season. At that time only four teams (Albright College, Elizabethtown College, Lebanon Valley College, and Lycoming College) made up the Commonwealth. The women (6-7, 4-3) will take the No. 4 seed.
