Spartans' Fourth Inning Too Much For Falcons

XML Box Score York, PA – Messiah College fell victim to a seven-run fourth inning from York College and lost 10-5 on the road. York scored two runs in the third and another in the eighth, but it was their outburst in the fourth that proved too much for the Falcons to overcome.

The game started well for Messiah when Joshua Good put them on the board in the second inning with an RBI single. Jacob Sprengle (double) scored on the play and an inning later he collected his second double of the game to knock in the Falcons' second run. Isaiah Shipman also collected an RBI in the third with a sac fly to give Messiah a 3-0 lead.

But Messiah's lead was short-lived as York responded with two runs in the bottom of the third to draw within 3-2. In the fourth inning the wheels came off for the visitors.

Paul Broomell continued in his start to open the inning, but he quickly allowed the first two batters to reach base. Colby Helgerson came in to relieve Broomell but promptly allowed three hits, a walk, and three runs to score without recording an out.

Mitch McClure then came in but struggled to find command. He walked his first two batters—the second of which forced in a run—before finally retiring three of the next four batters. But the inning included five total hits and three walks for the Spartans, with seven runs crossing the plate.

The game remained 9-3 until Messiah tried to chip away in the seventh. Derek Drake (double) and Sprengle (sac fly) each pushed across runs that brought Messiah within 9-5. But their deficit proved too large and York added another run in the eighth to complete the scoring.

Russell Woleslagel did pitch well in three innings of relief, allowing just two hits and an unearned run. Joseph Saufley, Drake, and Sprengle all had two hits and Good collected three hits to lead the Falcons.

Dan McNamara collected the win in relief for York. He finished 4.1 innings and allowed four hits and two earned runs.

Messiah will look to avoid a three-game losing streak when they return to conference play on Friday when they host Lebanon Valley for a 3:30 first pitch.
