Men Take Second, Women Fourth at MAC Outdoor Championships

Chester, PA - The Falcons closed their championship weekend off today with a second place finish for the men's team, while the women finished fourth in the conference, both out of twelve teams.  Widener University claimed the title for the men at 323 points, while Elizabethtown College seized first for the women at 153 points.
 
"It was a very good meet for Messiah Track and Field," said Messiah's head coach, Dale Fogelsanger."We had a significant amount of season bests, lifetime bests, and had athletes scoring from many different events."
 
Among Messiah's top performers for the weekend was Trevor Stutzman in the shot put and discus.  After winning the shot put on Friday, Stutzman came back today to claim a gold medal in the discus.  Stutzman threw a significant lifetime best mark of 51.27m (168'-02") nearly five feet further than his previous lifetime best, which currently ranks him fourth in the nation for Division III.  Matthew Miller also had a strong performance in the discus, scoring with a sixth place finish and a lifetime best throw of 42.15m (138'-03")
 
Stutzman's performances awarded him the male Field Athlete of the Year along with Tyler Williams of Widener.
 
"It was exciting to see Trevor Stutzman setting new MAC record in the shot, as well as his performance in the discus," said Fogelsanger."We're pleased he could win in these events and be awarded the field athlete of the year."
 
Messiah's Marie Johnson was a top scorer for the women this weekend, finishing first in the triple jump and second in the high jump on Friday, as well as claiming third in the long jump today. Johnson hit a new personal best mark on each of her six attempts today, hitting a final distance of 5.10m (16'-08.75") on her last attempt. For her accolades she was named the Rookie of the Year.

Kaitlyn Hostetler also performed extremely well in the jumps, placing seventh in triple jump and seizing fourth in the long jump today at 5.04 (16'-06.50").
 
Nicholas White also claimed a gold medal for Messiah, finishing first in the finals of the 110m hurdles at 15.11 seconds. White had already run a personal best in Friday's preliminaries of 15.15 seconds, which placed him fourth on Messiah's top ten performance list.  White's time today has now bumped him up to the third place spot on Messiah's top ten list.
 
Additionally, White had a solid performance in the 200m dash, scoring with a fifth place finish in the event.
 
Liz Martin was also a top finisher this weekend, winning the 400 intermediate hurdles for the fourth year in a row with a time of 1:03.15. Martin also scored in the 100m hurdles, finishing second, as well as scoring in the 100m dash with a sixth place finish.
 
Martin later contributed to the women's 4x400 meter relay, along with Emily Senning, Victoria Scrima, and Rachel Bowser to place fourth in the event with a season best time of 4:08.04 
 
The Falcons had some strong performances in the men's and women's pole vault this weekend, as Tim Moses and Rachel Robison both finished second in their respective events. Messiah's Drew Engle also scored for the men in fourth place, with an outdoor personal record of 4.50m (14'-09.00").
 
In the men's long jump, Josiah Haws hit a lifetime second-best mark of 6.28m (20'-07.25") to place sixth in the event.
 
Trevor Praestch and Braden Miller brought points to the team in the finals of the 400 meter dash, both running lifetime personal bests of 49.13 second and 50.76 seconds respectively. Praestch finished second overall, while Miller placed eighth.  Praestch had already run a personal best in preliminaries on Friday, which had bumped up his spot on Messiah's top ten performance list.  Praetsch's time from today now ranks him third on the top ten list, just ahead of Coach Dale Fogelsanger's time of 49.53 from 1987.
 
Praestch also scored in the 400 meter intermediate hurdles with a seventh place finish in finals.
 
Miller and Praetsch also brought their skills to the men's 4x400 meter relay, along with Jonphilip McGill and Jeremy White, also placing fourth with a time of 3:23.02.  
 
The Falcons also performed well in the javelin, Matthew Miller winning the event with a lifetime personal best of 56.01m (183'-09") three meters further than his previous best. For the women, Alyssa Mills also achieved a personal record, placing seventh with a throw of 35.41m (116'-02").
 
Messiah's distance runners also had some fine performances today, Cameron Shirk running a lifetime best time in the 1500 meter run of 4:02.34, while Joshua Pardoe ran a season second best time of 4:11.54. Shirk's time placed him seventh in the event, allowing him to score for the team.
 
Messiah's women also performed well in the 1500, Alissa Rogers and Leah Novak finishing with lifetime personal best times of 5:07.67 and 5:11.88 respectively.  Jaquelyne Young also ran well, achieving a season best time of
 
Additionally, two Messiah women competed in finals for the 800 meter run today, Emily Senning placing fourth with a college best time of 2:19.76 while Victoria Scrima placed eighth, running her second lifetime best this weekend of 2:23.32.
 
In addition, the Falcons saw some scorers in the men's and women's 5,000 meter race as Tasha Becker ran a significant lifetime best of 18:47.24, placing seventh in the conference.  For the men, Jared Schatz came back after a strong performance in the 3,000m steeplechase to run an incredible lifetime best of 15:28.48, also finishing seventh in the conference.
 
"The spirit of team really came together this weekend," said Fogelsanger. "Everyone came together to support each other, which helped produce many season performance bests. It was another solid Messiah Track and Field experience."
