XML Box Score 4 Gettysburg, PA – The Falcons split matches with Marietta University and McDaniel College on Saturday to finish up a two-day trip to the Battlefield Classic at Gettysburg College. The Falcons started Saturday's matches with a 3-1 (23-25, 25-21, 25-23, 25-17) win over Marietta before losing to McDaniel 3-0 (25-17, 26-24, 26-25).
Previously on Friday the Falcons had split matches with Washington College and PSU-Altoona. Messiah will next play on Wednesday, Sept. 3 when they host their home-opener against Elizabethtown College at 7:00 p.m.
Match One: Washington College (25-21, 25-16, 7-25, 25-23)Messiah women's volleyball fell to Washington College (Md.) today in the Battlefield Classic at Gettysburg College by a 3-1 score (25-21, 25-16, 7-25, 25-23). Washington came out strong and won the first two sets before the Falcons stormed back in the third set and won in dominating fashion with a score of 25-7. Messiah fought hard in the fourth and final set but Washington was too much to handle and gave the Falcons a 25-23 loss to end the match.
The Falcons came out flat during the first set and trailed by a score of 20-8. Messiah then went on a 13-4 run sparked by seven assists from
Brooke Gallagher. Unfortunately, a service error by the Falcons gave Washington the first set.
The second set was another close contest with Washington winning 25-16. Washington's Jess Daunoras had four kills before Kristin Lee had the final kill to complete the scoring.
Messiah dominated Washington in the third set cumulating a .500 attack percentage compared to Washington's -.192 percentage. The final kill came from the hand of
Kristen Douglas to cement the 25-7 score.
The Falcons lost a heart-breaker in what would be the fourth and final set of the match 25-23. Messiah and Washington were even the entire set but the Falcons could never grab the lead. The Falcons were plagued again by a service error to give Washington the win.
Messiah committed nine service errors across the match.
Messiah's
Taylor Hook had an outstanding match finishing with 17 kills—a career-high— and a .343 attack percentage. Gallagher finished the match with 33 assists, also a career best mark. On the defensive end
Emily Zellers finished with 18 digs.
Match Two: Penn State-Altoona (25-18, 25-12, 25-17)In their second match of the Battlefield Classic the Falcons took a 3-0 decision from the Nittany Lions of Penn-State Altoona (25-18, 25-12, 25-17).
The first set was relatively back and forth. After falling behind 4-3 early in the set, the Falcons went on an 8-1 run to take control. After finishing the run they led by no fewer than four points the rest of the way.
Alyssa Vorbeck collected four kills while three other Falcons had at least two kills in the effort.
In the second set the Falcons utilized runs of 6-0 and 7-0 to lead them to their largest set win against the Nittany Lions. Both of these runs were aided by stellar service;
Danielle Weaver had back-to-back service aces to increase the Falcons lead to 7-3, then
Brooke Gallagher had three consecutive aces of her own to push the lead to 15-8. In the second set, the Falcons accumulated six of their 10 total service aces in the match.
The third and final set saw the Falcons put the Lions away by a score of 25-17. The match was closer than the final score indicates, as the Falcons scored 12 of the final 16 points to break a 13-13 tie and earn the sweep.
Leading the attack in the match was Vorbeck with 10 kills, followed by
Kristen Douglas' nine kills.
Brooke Gallagher added four kills of her own to go along with 26 assists and 15 digs.
The Falcons continue the Battlefield Classic Saturday afternoon when they take on Marietta College at 12:00 p.m. and McDaniel College at 2:00 p.m.
