XML Box Score Grantham, PA - In their first conference match of the year, the Falcons swept the Widener Pride 3-0 (25-12, 25-18, 25-10), on Wednesday night.
In the first set, the Falcons jumped out to a 7-3 advantage thanks in part to four straight attack errors by the Pride. After Widener cut the lead to 11-8, the Falcons rattled off nine straight points, with
Brooke Gallagher serving, to put the first set out of reach.
Kristen Douglas' six, first set, kills were a Falcon team high in the 25-12 set win.
The second set was a much more even battle, with the Pride and Falcons trading runs throughout the set. With the scored tied at six, the Falcons would go on a 11-4 run, to seemingly secure the set victory. However, with the Falcons leading 17-10 the Pride would go on a streak of their own, winning seven straight points (five off of Messiah attack errors) to tie the set at 17.
Just moments later, with the score even at 18, the Falcons would begin a 7-0 run that would cap off the set and give the Falcons a 2-0 set advantage.
Jane Underman's three kills across this run would punctuate a solid set (7 kills) for the sophomore.
The Falcons cruised to a 25-10 third set victory, utilizing a 12-1 run to open the set.
Between the end of the second set and the beginning of the thrid set the Falcons went on an impressive 19-1.
Leading the attack for the Falcons were
Jane Underman (13 kills and a .414 attack percentage) and
Kristen Douglas (11 kills).
Brooke Gallagher lead the Falcons with 36 assists and three Falcons ended the match with double digit digs, Douglas (16),
Emily Zellers (13), and Underman (10).
The Falcons will next play Saturday, Sept. 13, when they travel to Winchester, VA to take on Shenandoah University and Guilford College at 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. respectively.
