XML Box Score 2 Winchester, VA - The Falcons swept Guilford College (25-13, 25-13, 25-22) and Shenandoah University (25-19, 19-25, 25-18, 25-18) in their tri-match Saturday afternoon at Shenandoah University.
Match One: Guilford College (25-13, 25-13, 25-22) Messiah women's volleyball started the day off right when they swept the Quakers of Guilford College 3-0 (25-13, 25-13, 25-22) in their first match of the afternoon.
The Falcons set the tone in the first set of the match as they won 25-13 against Guilford College. Messiah tallied sixteen kills throughout the set compared to six by the Quakers. The Falcons led 18-12 late in the set when they put together a five-point streak that included a service error, and two attacking errors by the Quakers. A service ace from
Kristen Douglas and a kill by
Alyssa Vorbeck capped off the five-point streak to give the Falcons a 23-12 lead. Messiah finished off the set with another kill from Vorbeck and an attack error by the Quakers to give the Falcons the first set victory.
Messiah won the second set with an identical score from the first set 25-13. The Falcons played smart in the second set. Only two-errors were committed by the Falcons while Guilford committed seven. Two service aces by
Kristen Douglas and kill from
Emily Buckwalter gave the Falcons the second set victory.
The third set was a hard fought battle as the Falcons pulled out a 25-22 victory. The score would go back and forth as neither team gave up. The score was 23-22 late in the set when the Quakers plagued themselves again as they gave up two attack errors which gave Messiah the match victory.
Alyssa Vorbeck and
Brooke Gallagher finished with 7 kills in the match. Gallagher also added 29 assists.
Match Two: Shenandoah University (25-19, 19-25, 25-18, 25-18) The Falcons finished off their day with another win as they beat the Hornets of Shenandoah University 3-1 (25-19, 19-25, 25-18, 25-18).
The Falcons started the set out strong as they jumped out to an early 8-1 lead by kills from
Brooke Gallagher,
Taylor Hook, and
Jane Underman. The Hornets would battle back late to make the score 23-18.
Jane Underman and
Kristen Douglas crushed the Hornets intentions on a comeback as they finished the set with two back-to-back kills to give the Falcons the victory.
After a great first set performance, the Falcons struggled in the second. Messiah committed ten errors while the Hornets only committed two. Shenandoah's Rachel Gross added 6 kills during the set and tallied 14 for the match, which led the Hornets to the second set victory.
Messiah avenged their second set loss with a third set victory as they won 25-18. The Falcons grabbed the lead early and would never let go.
Brooke Gallagher would set the Falcons up for victory with 11 assists in the set. Gallagher finished the match with an impressive thirty-three assists.
The Falcons made the fourth the set the final set of the match as they won 25-18. Messiah was led by
Taylor Hook who added 3 kills, which helped the Falcons get the match victory. The final point of the match was scored off a service error by the Hornets.
Taylor Hook led the Falcons offensively with twelve kills on the night.
Brooke Gallagher had a stellar night on defense as she tallied sixteen digs. The Falcons improved their record to 8-2 and will be back in action September 16th when they travel to Frederick, Maryland to take on Hood College.
