Grantham, PA - Grantham, PA – The Falcons fell to conference rival Stevenson University Wednesday night 3-1 (25-21, 22-25, 25-20, 25-18) in a rematch of last year's conference championship. Messiah failed to avenge their conference championship loss, which dropped the Falcons to 9-4 overall and 2-1 in the Commonwealth Conference.
Stevenson's Annika Schwartz led all attackers in the match with 15 kills.
Jane Underman led Messiah with 11 total kills, followed by
Kristen Douglas with six.
Brooke Gallagher assisted on 33 of the Falcons' 37 kills.
The Mustangs held the Falcons to just a .018 hitting percentage in the match, but Messiah held the advantage in total attacks with 170 compared to 165. Stevenson proved why they only have one loss on the season as they improved their record to 12-1.
The Falcons played well the first two sets of night only losing 25-21 and winning the second set 25-22. Down 17-14, Messiah strung together a six point scoring streak during the middle of the second set giving the Falcons a 19-17 lead. The Falcons and Mustangs traded scores until a service error by Stevenson gave the Falcons a 25-22 second set victory.
Stevenson played tough the final two sets of the match beating the Falcons 25-20 and 25-18 to capture the match victory. The Mustangs committed just ten errors in set three and four compared to the Falcons seventeen.
Messiah will next take the court this weekend at the Gallaudet tournament when they take on Marymount University, Rowan University, and No. 1 Hope College.
