Falcons Shutout Grove City, Win Ninth Straight

Grantham, PA - Grantham, PA – The Messiah Falcons took on the Wolverines of Grove City College under the lights at Shoemaker Field on Saturday night.  After a hard fought 90 minutes the Falcons came away with the 2-0 victory.

While the Falcons dominated possession throughout much of the evening and out shot the Wolverines 25-1, they did not have the amount of quality looks that they have been accustom to seeing this season. Of the Falcons' 25 shots, only six were on frame.

The first 15 minutes of the game was a back and forth battle in the midfield, with neither side taking a controlling position. Through the rest of the first half the Falcons began establishing possession but the Grove City defense did not allow the Falcons to have many clean looks. The first real Messiah chance came in the 17th minute when Nikki Elsaesser had an open look at the goal from distance. Her shot from outside the box on the left side went wide right.

In the 25th minute, Elsaesser again had the ball on the left side of the box but this time would send a centering chip into the middle of the box where Marisa Weaver got a head on it and redirected the ball into the left side of the goal. The Wolverine goalie was in no position to make the save as Weaver's header trickled into the side netting, giving the Falcons a 1-0 lead.

The Falcons would threated throughout the rest of the half including open looks for both Holly Burgard and Natalie Hoober but both missed just high of the goal in the chances. As a result, the Falcons took just a 1-0 lead into the intermission.

The Falcons came out of the half with a furious pace, taking five shots in the first five minutes of the half and, while none of these shots found the back of the net, the Falcons set the tone for the second-half.

The Falcons out shot the Wolverines 15-0 in the second half and eventually found their insurance goal in the 71st minute. On a corner kick Marisa Weaver crossed the ball into the box, where it found the head of Hannah Weyland who put the ball in the back of the net puting the Falcons up 2-0.

The two goals would be all the Falcons needed, and they would hold on for the 2-0 victory. The shutout was the Falcons' eighth of the season and seventh-straight; have not allowed a goal since Sept. 3 in a game against Johns Hopkins.

The Falcons will next take the field at home on Wednesday, Oct. 1 at 7:00 p.m. when the Elizabethtown Blue Jays travel to Grantham, Pa.
