Falcons' Late Score Seals Win Over E-Town

XML Box Score Grantham, PA - Taylor Holt's game-winner in the 62nd minute led No. 12 Messiah College to a 3-2 win over rival Elizabethtown on Wednesday night on Anderson Field. Holt benefited from a bit of fortune on the tally, as E-Town keeper Selene Jones thought the offering was running wide of the cage; Jones let the shot go past her only to see it tuck inside the left post for the momentous score.

The goal was the difference in a tight contest that was end-to-end for most of the night. At the beginning, though, E-Town was able to control most of the possession and score in the 19th minute. Andrea Keady did the honors for the visitors after dribbling her way through Messiah defense and placing a quick shot past Messiah's Carly Day.

Looking for an answer, the Falcons' Carissa Gehman evened the score in the 23rd minute by muscling her way inside the endline and to the cage. The goal was Gehman's third on the season and sparked life back into the Falcons. The momentum stayed with Messiah into the 30th minute when Emily Rubright scored off a penalty corner set. Rubright's goal came off a rebound and she buried it into the right side of the cage.

Unfortunately, the lead was short-lived as Emma Christman knotted the game at 2-2 just seconds later.

While both teams' offense shined in the first-half, the defenses battled in the second-half with just five more shots coming between the two teams.

Messiah would collect four of those second-half shots and it was their last one that made the difference.

A speedy Holt created a chance on the counter-attack and found space into the attacking end. Her shot towards the cage looked to be heading wide and passed the end line. However, as mentioned, it found the inside of the cage and gave Messiah the eventual game-winner.

Nevertheless, Elizabethtown would not go down without a fight. At the 66:21 mark, Alyssa Aichele's shot forced Day to make a big save.

With the win Messiah moved to 2-0 on the season. They will next play on Saturday when they travel to Juniata for a game at 1:00 p.m.
