Grantham, PA - No. 1 Messiah College scored two goals in the first-half and three more in the second to support a shutout effort against Lebanon Valley College on Wednesday night.
Nikki Elsaesser tallied twice for the Falcons as they moved to 2-0 in the MAC Commonwealth.
Marisa Weaver scored the first goal for Messiah in just the fifth minute of action when she was played into the right side of the box. Weaver turned quickly into a shot that rocketed past keeper Taylor Reinhold. The score was Weave's ninth of the season.
Later in the frame Elsaesser was played quickly behind the Dutchmen defense for a one-on-one chance against Reinhold. Elsaesser touched over the slide of the keeper for a short hit on the open net.
Messiah held a 13-2 advantage in shots at the break, and in the second-half they scored three more times. The third goal came from Elsaesser, and once again it came on a long ball through the defense for a one-on-one opportunity with Reinhold. This time Elsaesser beat the keeper with a hard strike inside the post for her team-leading 10th goal of the game.
Macaulay Soto collected the assist on the tally.
In the 76th minute
Lilly Shover and
Ally Reinhardt connected after a broken corner kick for a 4-0 lead. Reinhardt sealed the tally with a lunging redirection in front of the reach of Reinhold. Soon after, with less than two minutes to play,
Kate Shults put through her second goal of the season to cap the scoring.
DJ Cole collected the helper with a ball slotted over the 18.
Messiah finished with 23 shots, and they allowed just the two opportunities--both on frame--to Lebanon Valley.
The loss dropped Lebanon Valley to 8-3, and also 1-1 in the conference.
Messiah (10-0-1) will next play on Saturday when they host Farmingdale State College at 3:00 p.m.
