Grantham, PA - Messiah College raced out to a 16-6 first quarter lead and never looked back in a 67-49 win over Lehman College on Saturday afternoon. The win pushed the Falcons to 1-1 on the season as they also recovered from a suspenseful double-overtime loss on Friday night.
Gillian Glackin led the Falcons with 13 points and
Alecia Rohrer collected her second-straight double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Ten total players also scored at least three points for the Falcons, with eight of those players scoring at least five points.
Messiah scored the first eight points of the game and soon went up 12-3 on a second-chance bucket from
Jen Fairbanks. A three-pointer moments later from
Kristen Smoluk put Messiah up 15-6.
Lehman came within eight points in the second-quarter, but a three-pointer by
Hannah Brown with 5:44 to play pushed the lead to 11 points. Messiah stayed in front by double-figures for the rest of the half, and even led by 17 points at one point.
At the start of the third quarter Messiah had to withstand a 8-0 burst from Lehman that brought them to within four points, 33-29. The Falcons did so with a 6-0 run of their own that included a big three-pointer from
Dominique Seamon. Moments later, another three-pointer from Smoluk put Messiah up 44-33 and Messiah led by double-figures the rest of the way.
Messiah's bench outscored Lehman's reserves by an incredible amount, 39-2. Rohrer, Brown, and Smoluk combined for 26 of those points. Messiah also improved upon a 1-13 performance from deep on Friday to go 6-10 on Saturday.
Jennifer Navarro led Lehman with 21 points and Amely Del Rosario added 16 points.
Messiah next plays on Friday, Nov. 20 in the Marymount Tournament. The Falcons' opponent is yet to be determined.
