Granthan, PA - Hearbreak found the Falcons on Wednesday when Jayme Verman scored the go-ahead goal for No. 12 York College with just 1.6 seconds to play in an 8-7 loss to the Spartans. Verman picked up an errant shot from her teammate behind the left post and stunned seemingly everyone on the field with a wrap-around stunner.
The decision was crushing in the moment considering Messiah rallied from a 6-3 halftime deficit and nearly scored themselves less than a minute earlier. But Verman's game-high third goal of the afternoon proved to be the difference.
The Falcons rallied from their halftime deficit to tie the game at 7-7 with 10:44 to play. The tying goal came from
Madi Brunk, with the assist to
Claire Stikeleather (click on story image to see this goal in the "Highlight of the Night.")
Almost 10 minutes later Stikeleather was nearly the hero for the Falcons, but her running shot across the eight-yard line hit off the crossbar. York managed to grab the loose ball out of the air to set up their final possession.
On that possession Sarah Castle dodged into the middle from the left side and fired a shot that went just wide of the left post. At first Castle's shot seemed to be the final effort of regulation, but Verman quickly scooped it up and scored over the shoulder of goalie
Alexa Dipeso.
The Spartans roared in excitement, and paused only for seconds in their celebration as the officials confirmed Verman's stick. With less than two seconds to play, the result was all but solidified and became final once the horn sounded.
For Messiah, the loss was their third in the past four games, though today's loss and last week's loss to Dickinson (8-7, 2OT) feel especially heavy considering the Falcons were in a position to win both contests.
On Wednesay, the game was a battle of game plans. York's deliberate offensive attack genereated 32 shots, while their high-pressure defense caused 11 of the Falcons' 18 turnovers. York also grabbed 23 groundballs and held the majority of field territory. Messiah, meanwhile, was effective in their own offensive effort as they put 10 of thei 13 shots on cage. Dipeso was especially terrific for Messiah as she collected 11 saves.
Shayna Delaney, Stikeleather, and Bajus all scored in the second-half to help Messiah erase their deficit and tie the game at 6-6. Allison Kolacy answered quickly for York with 13:44 to play to put her team up 7-6. But Stikeleather and Brunk combined for the aforementioned game-tying tally two minutes later, setting up a furious and back-and-forth final stretch.
In the end, the game proved to be one of both inches and seconds, as Stikeleather's shot with 44 seconds to play hit the crossbar and Verman's final shot barely beat the clock.
The win moved No. 12 York to 4-1, while Messiah fell to 2-3. The Falcons will next play when they host No. 6 TCNJ on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
