Winter Haven, FL - The Falcons (3-5) picked up their first win of Spring Break Tuesday afternoon over Springfield College 7-0. The much-needed victory came after dropping their third straight contest of the week, a 4-0 loss, to an undefeated Rowan University (13-0) squad.
Game One - Rowan 4, Messiah 0The Falcons battled throughout their first contest of the day, keeping things close through the first two innings. Both teams had runners on base in the early innings but couldn't find a way to get on the board. The Profs eventually broke through in the third when they strung together two singles for the opening run. Alysa Romero got the RBI on a single up the middle.
The Falcons' best chance of scoring came in the bottom of the frame when they had two on with two outs. Both
Tina Lehman and
Courtney Allen hit two-out singles to give their team life, but
Becky Notte struckout to end the inning.
The top of the fourth proved to be a series of unfortunate events for the Falcons, leading to three more runs for the Profs. The inning started on a bad note when Rowan's leadoff batter was hit by a pitch to become their first baserunner. She later advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. The next batter was also hit by a pitch, putting runners on first and second with just one out. Things continued to go south in the next at-bat when the batter stuckout, but the pitch was mishandled by Notte behind the plate. Both runners decided to take advantage of the miscue and advance a base. Notte attempted to make the play at third, but her throw was misplayed by
Amanda Jones at short, resulting in an unearned run for Rowan. Shilah Snead added salt to the Falcons' wounds in the next at-bat when she doubled to center, driving in yet another run for the Profs.
The Falcons were ever so close to getting out of the inning, but failed to make the next play. With a runner (Snead) on second, Mia Baldassari bunted the ball directly to the pitcher for what seemed to be a routine play.
Claressa Mees threw the ball toward first, but
Emily Quatrale (who was covering from second) couldn't find the bag and the runner was called safe. Quatrale attempted to get a very aggressive Snead at the plate, but her throw was off the mark.
Fortunately for the Falcons Mees got the next batter to groundout, ending the inning. In the end, the Profs scored three runs on two hits and three errors.
Messiah struggled to create much offensive buzz throughout the remainder of the game, managing only two hits.
Tina Lehman,
Courtney Allen,
Amanda Jones (2B), and
Sydney Boreman each picked up a hit in the game.
In the top of the sixth
Courtney Allen relieved Mees in the pitcher's circle. With the change, the Profs were held to only one hit and no runs, despite the fact that they left five on base. All other baserunners made their way on the basepath via walks or an illegal pitch. Through two innings of work, Allen gave up one hit, walked four, but held the Profs scoreless. Mees (1-2) was charged with the loss.
Game Two - Messiah 7, Springfield 0The Falcons snapped a three game losing streak Tuesday afternoon with a solid 7-0 victory over Springfield College.
Carrie Fix (2-3) went the distance for Messiah, picking up her second win of the season. She finished the game with five strikeouts and gave up only three hits.
The bats came alive against the Pride (1-5) as the Falcons scored three runs in both the fifth and sixth innings, adding to their single run that was scored in the top of the third.
Tina Lehman came up big for Messiah, driving in runs in the third and fifth. The fifth inning also saw key hits come from
Becky Notte and
Nicole Blantz, while a sacrifice fly from Fix aided the Falcons' scoring.
Nicole Blantz continued to lead the offensive charge in the sixth with an RBI single to start the scoring. She was followed by a base-clearing single that scored two more runs, giving Messiah the 7-0 lead and eventual victory.
In the end, Blantz went 3-3 with one RBI and three runs scored, while Lehman scored once, drove in one RBI and went 2-3.
The Falcons return to the diamond tomorrow to face Kean University at 10:00 a.m. and Ramapo College at 12:15 p.m.
