Falcons Stay Ahead, Sink Marlins on Southern Trip

XML Box Score Virginia Beach, VA – Messiah College won 12 of 16 faceoffs and went perfect on 14 clear attempts to fuel a 9-7 win over Virginia Wesleyan. The win moved the Falcons to 4-3 on the season.
 
The Falcons started the game quickly, scoring the game's first three goals to take a lead. Brady Marburger got Messiah on the board in a hurry, taking the opening faceoff and racing down for the score.
 
Andrew Harris kept the pressure on with a goal at the 13:44 mark, and soon after Ryan Mayer put one through off an assist from Ryan Van Bochoven.
 
Despite falling behind so quickly, Virginia Wesleyan regained composure to score the next three goals and tie the game. With the score 3-3 entering the second quarter, Harris scored again for another lead.
 
After a tally by the Marlins, Tyler Goglio and Van Bochoven each scored to help the Falcons build a 6-4 lead at the intermission.
 
In the third quarter both teams scored just a single goal, with Matt Franken doing the honors for Messiah.
 
The Falcons' fourth quarter proved to be the difference as they pulled ahead on tallies from Drew Pagenkopf and Goglio. Virginia Weslyan scored the game's final two goals, but their deficit was too much to overcome.
 
Messiah finished with a 41-28 edge in shots, with Brooks Arnold collecting seven saves in a strong effort.
 
The loss dropped the Marlins to 3-3.
 
Messiah will next play on Mar. 25 when they travel to Susquehanna University for a game at 4:00 p.m.
